Finding Glimmers: Embracing Moments of Joy and Hope Amid Life’s Chaos

In the fast pace of daily life, finding moments of joy—small “glimmers”—can be a powerful anchor to well-being. Originally discussed by therapist Deb Dana, LCSW, glimmers are subtle, positive cues that offer a sense of calm, safety, and connection. They are the opposite of “triggers” and help remind us of joy in our lives. Recognizing glimmers isn’t about ignoring life’s challenges; rather, it’s about making a choice, as Henri Nouwen once said, “to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” This episode explores the idea of glimmers as a tool for intentional joy, discussing how setting an intention to seek them can cultivate resilience and lift our spirits.

Joy and glimmers go hand-in-hand. As we purposefully notice glimmers—like a shared laugh, a beautiful sunset, or a quiet, comforting moment—we affirm that joy is a choice we can make, even in difficult times. In this episode, we’ll also discuss why joy matters in today’s world. In a time marked by grief, uncertainty, and ambiguous loss (a term coined by Pauline Boss to describe losses that are unresolved), finding glimmers is an act of resilience. Naming our grief and choosing joy, as past guests on this show have shared, brings us closer to peace. A favorite saying from past guest Deb Dana captures this beautifully: “As you begin to see a glimmer, you begin to look for more.”

How to Look for Glimmers in Daily Life:

  • Start each day with an intention to notice joy.
  • Find calm in small moments: a sunrise, a warm cup of tea.
  • Connect with nature, pets, reading, friends and family or creativity to find joy.
  • Capture glimmers mentally—relish and store them via the “See, Savor, Save” method.
  • Share glimmers with others.

In embracing glimmers, we’re reminded that intentional joy and self-kindness can help create more positive, resilient lives. As Cory Allen puts it, “When you move through life with self-belief and optimism, the world starts treating you differently.” By aligning with glimmers, we open the door to more joy and connection.
