  • This week on the podcast, EB Sanders joins me to talk about careers. One of the things we talk about is roles and responsibilities, and how what so many of us crave is simple clarity around what we do, and what other people are supposed to be doing. I share a story about one place I worked, and was the new person, and my new colleagues kept loading up my plate with whatever crappy part of their job they wanted to offload. ⠀ ⠀ I remember having a conversation with the person that was managing me and asking her if the things that had been delegated to me aligned with what she wanted my role to be focusing on. It took a little bit of courage to walk in and ask for clarity and alignment. The truth was that she also did not know that others were taking it upon themselves to ditch responsibilities they didn't want on a newcomer, nor did she want the role to be doing those things. ⠀ ⠀ It's totally okay to have the conversation of "Is this really what you want me doing? This isn't what we talked about in the interview stage. We were out playing with friends last night and Z looked up and said that it looked like we were in Star Wars, and, was later amazed at how quickly the moon was moving up in the sky. I’m grateful for some new perspectives, fresh ideas, lightness and beauty. And for the expectation that everything will come back around, every season, all our lessons.   • There’s something about that heart / mind thing that was really hard for me to figure out. As a very heady, thinking person (and someone who was really good at managing projects), it seemed hard (I know see that it was actually vulnerable, which is also hard) to step away from my thinking, building, doing, managing head, and trust that my heart knew the way.⠀ ⠀ The thing is, joy is all about heart.   • “We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip, a trip takes us.” – John Steinbeck⠀ ⠀ Here’s what I have learned after doing a podcast for awhile. At the heart of any creative process is surrender - surrender to what could be, to what might show up as you’re working, to what the spirit sends your way, and to slowing down. This would not have been something I’d have believed was possible even 5 years ago.
