Discovering the Foundations of Joy

Ep73: Discovering the Foundations of Joy with host Paula Jenkins

February is “Foundation” month on the podcast, and this week’s episode is a solocast all about discovering the foundations of joy in your life. In this episode I’m sharing some of my thoughts and experience with joy as a foundation and muse in my life, and in the process, I share how you can set up joy as a foundation in your life as well.

My search for joy started simply enough, with this one belief that started coming on stronger and stronger: In life, there are really two choices: to follow and make decisions from a place of love, or to follow and make decisions from a place of fear. I now see this as an early way of setting a foundation of joy in my life. As I actively sought out, and said yes to the things that were coming from a place of love, I was also choosing joy. I was choosing joy and inviting it further into my life.

And this is what creating a foundation of joy is all about. It’s recognizing that you make a choice to seek out joy, and you make a choice to include joy in your life.

And why is this important?

Because setting up a foundation of joy is setting up a new kind of basis by which you can live your life.
When you’re choosing joy as a foundation, it helps build a solid base for your whole world and your whole reality. It started helping me see things in a new light. Because unlike a standard lens of judging things on being successful or a failure, joy has an application no matter your outcome. You could succeed in your goals and feel joy, but you can also fall short of a goal, and be able to find joy in your life despite the fact that you may not have met your outward facing goal.
Choosing joy also means that you can be more focused on the present moment, on the feeling you want to feel right now, and less on the outcome of whatever you’re doing. This idea alone changed the way I saw things.
Once you’ve defined the feeling you want to have, you can use it as a guide post in setting other, intentional goals for your life. Based on her work, I call joy a “way finding emotion.” Joy can be the thing you’re focused on, it can be your foundation, and then from there, you can create a life around that which will support joy in your life.
